How it All Started
Hi, I'm Ignatius Foo, founder of IGX design studio.
I've been in practice in Interior, Furniture and Product design for more than 12 years. It all started when I finished my training at Lasalle SIA, College of the Arts in 1995 (in interior design) and went on to work locally and overseas in places like Germany and China.
In Germany, I worked for Sieger Architecture and Design (one of the Worlds leading product and architecture design firms) in 1995, where I assisted in product design for cutlery and tablewares for the company WMF. My work at Seiger has showed me why German design continues to lead the world in many areas - they have excellent attention to detail. It is often the smallest detail that may make or break a product design. Since then I have adopted this as my motto in every project.
Following this, I worked in Beijing China at CDI (Communications and Design International) on commercial / office and exhibition design. Here I nurtured my communication skills with a different culture and society. The companies we worked with had very different ideas about what was practical or beautiful. Within the scope of our work this was always a very difficult challenge. However, finding ways to overcome the cultural barriers and find meeting points in our design was always rewarding.
Often, I feel, designers try to enforce or persuade their clients into accepting their ideas ... after my experiences in Germany and China - I have realised the importance about finding the personal needs and wants of my client (and it is always personal even at a corporate level) and letting that inform my "original" work. It is a process that involves a meeting of minds - that's my second motto.
Since 1999, I have setup my own practice, and have undertaken design projects including: F&N Coca Cola (lobby at Tuas), Times the Bookshop (Marina Square, Plaza Singapura, Funan and Jelita), private houses, offices, commercial shops and HDBs.
In my years of work, I've found that some clients are not fully aware of the creative process of originating and innovating products, or design, and at times they dictate the outcome of the design,by referencing other already existent designs. I strongly believe that all designs must derive from personal needs and wants, and must be original or innovative. As such I'm always passionate about finding out more about my client and their needs, so that I can weave originality into form and function. This is the essence of what I believe, and it is this passion that drives me to always treat every project as Unique.
I hope that the following pages on my web, could be a source of inspiration to anyone who likes art and design. Thank you for visiting my site. If you feel inspired in any way,and would like to know more about my services, do drop me a line through my contact page.
